A key function of bipolar plates is to collect the current generated by a single cell and conduct it to adjacent cells, thus connecting the entire fuel cell stack. Graphite is an excellent electrical conductor with extremely high electronic conductivity. The low contact and bulk resistance of graphite bipolar plates ensures efficient current transmission, minimizing ohmic losses and thereby improving the volumetric power density and energy efficiency of the fuel cell stack. This is the foundation for the fuel cell's powerful power output.

 

Furthermore, the internal environment of a fuel cell is acidic, characterized by high temperature, high humidity, and the presence of highly oxidizing peroxyl radicals. High-purity graphite is extremely inert and virtually corrosion-resistant in this harsh environment. Corrosion forms a non-conductive oxide film on the metal surface, increasing contact resistance and reducing battery performance. Graphite plates do not form such oxide films on their surfaces, maintaining stable low electrical resistance over long periods of time.

 

The entire stack requires considerable clamping force to ensure good contact between components while also withstanding internal fluid pressure. Although pure graphite is brittle, the addition of polymers such as resins to graphite composites significantly enhances their mechanical strength (flexural and compressive). This allows them to withstand the mechanical stresses of stack assembly and operation, providing strong support for the fragile membrane electrode, and maintaining the integrity of the battery structure.
